Computational Design
We explore the intersection between design and technology by creating our own software. By doing this we come up with new creative ideas. The computer is our main tool for designing.
Why?
Mainstream design software like the Adobe Creative Suite is important in our workflow. These tools are great for production work. But when it comes to explore new ideas, they often block creativity.
How?
We use Processing and openFrameworks as a digital sketchbook for our ideas. Both are open-source and great environments for creating. These platforms enable us to play.
Most commercial software is built to do only one task. You can either design a poster or edit a video. We create our software so it can output high resolution images for print, vector-based PDF files to send to a plotter or lasercutter as well as video.
Input
Processing and openFrameworks give us more possibilities to interact with computers. We don’t have use the standard keyboard + mouse combo all the time. A small list of devices we can use:
- WiiMote controllers
- Webcam
- Microphone
- Touchscreen
- Mobile Devices (iPhone, iPad)
- Midi Controller
- Custom electronics with sensors (Arduino)
Output
- Visualizing data
- Interactive art installations
- Video
- Interior design
- Software for mobile devices (iOS, Android)
